Tactical nuclear weapons are those which could be used over relatively short distances.
The term “tactical” means types of weapons, including smaller bombs and missiles used as “battlefield” weapons. Russia has about 2,000 tactical nuclear weapons.
They can be placed on various types of missiles which are normally used to deliver conventional explosives also they can even be fired as artillery shells on a battlefield.
They have also been developed for aircraft and ships, for instance, torpedoes and depth charge to target submarines.
Russia could be more willing to use smaller tactical weapons than larger strategic missiles as a conventional force, that way Russia wouldn’t be seen to cross the big nuclear threshold.
Tactical nuclear weapons come in different sizes and power. They can come from one kiloton all the way to 100 kilotons.
The largest nuclear warheads are 800 kilotons.
The bomb that killed around 146,000 people in Hiroshima Japan, during World War Two, was 15 kilotons. The only time nuclear weapons have been used in conflict was used by the US at the end of World War Two against Japan.
Russia is heavily dependent on Chinese support, but China has a ‘no first use’ nuclear doctrine. So if Putin did use them, it would be incredibly difficult for China to stand by him. If he used them, he would probably lose China.
Russia has 5,997 nuclear bombs, Nato has 5,943 nuclear bombs spread out between America 5,428, France 290, and Britain 225.
China has 350 nuclear bombs, Pakistan 165 nuclear bombs, India 160 nuclear bombs, Israel 90 nuclear bombs, and North Korea 20 Nuclear bombs.
