Scientists are calling it a “mega-drought” brought on by climate change. The U.S. Drought Monitor places 60% of the Western states under severe, extreme, or exceptional drought.
It’s taking a dramatic toll on the Colorado River system that provides water to 40 million people in seven states. The hover dam which is 85 years old much of the water in the dam is gone. In 2000 the dam was at the top today it has drastically dropped.
Lake Mead has dropped so much that it has cut the dam’s hydropower output by nearly 25%. Lake Mead is at just 37% of its capacity, the nation’s largest reservoir, is on track to soon hit its lowest level ever recorded.
This system is a crucial water supply for Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Southern California. Since 2000, Lake Mead has dropped 130 feet, about the height of a 13-story building.
For the first time ever, the federal government is expected to declare a water shortage on the lower Colorado River later this summer. There will be automatic cuts to the water supply for Nevada and Arizona starting in 2022.
The water to farms in Arizona comes from Lake Mead. If you don’t have irrigation water, you can’t farm. Farmers in parts of Arizona are expected to lose nearly all of their water from Lake Mead in 2023, so they are digging wells to pump groundwater to try to save their farms.
NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System, says that during the past few months, several states including Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah experienced their most intense period of drought since the Drought Monitor began back in 2000. As a result, the soil moisture content is at its lowest levels in at least 120 years.
