1,100+ Signed open letter calling for a 6-Month Ban on Creating Powerful A.I. because of the Threat to Humanity

Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak are among the prominent technologists and artificial intelligence researchers who have signed an open letter calling for a six-month moratorium on the development of advanced A.I. systems.

The letter was signed by several notable figures including the CEO of Tesla and the co-founder of Apple. Other signatories include Emad Mostaque, the CEO of Stability AI, the company that contributed to the creation of Stable Diffusion, a popular text-to-image generation model, and Connor Leahy, the CEO of Conjecture, another A.I. lab. Evan Sharp, one of the co-founders of Pinterest, and Chris Larson, a co-founder of the cryptocurrency company Ripple, have also signed the letter.

Yoshua Bengio, a computer scientist who is a pioneer in the field of deep learning and a winner of the Turing Award, has signed a letter requesting technology companies to stop training any artificial intelligence (AI) systems that are more powerful than GPT-4. GPT-4 is the latest large language processing AI that was developed by the San Francisco-based company OpenAI.

Elon Musk has been vocal in expressing his concerns about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) running out of control and its possible threat to humanity. As a result, he co-founded OpenAI, a non-profit research laboratory in 2015 and was its largest initial donor.

In 2018, he resigned from the company and its board. Recently, he criticized the company’s decision to accept billions of dollars in investment from Microsoft and launch a for-profit arm.

According to the letter, A.I. systems like GPT-4 are now capable of performing general tasks at a level comparable to human beings. However, there are concerns about the potential risks associated with the use of such systems, including the widespread dissemination of false information and the mass automation of jobs.

The letter raises concerns about the potential dangers of AI systems reaching superintelligence and posing a threat to human civilization.

A letter has been issued calling for all A.I. laboratories to halt the training of A.I. systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for at least six months. The letter states that the moratorium should be “verifiable.” Additionally, the letter urges governments to use this six-month period to significantly expedite the development of resilient A.I. governance systems.

OpenAI and large tech companies developing powerful A.I. models have not yet commented on the open letter.

The AI chatbot technology’s next version, GPT-5, is reportedly set to finish its training in 2023, which could lead to a significant AI revolution.
