The Mississippi River in America has Dropped to Record Lows

The Mississippi River was historically low from Illinois to Louisiana this week and will continue to decrease water levels as the forecast remains dry.

The Midwest has seen the worst deterioration, with the amount of area covered in drought increasing by an area of about 60,000 square miles, which is equivalent to the size of Georgia.

Topsoil moisture continues to dry across portions of the Ohio Valley and the Corn Belt. Drought conditions cover 98% of Nebraska, and more than 40% is in the worst two categories, according to the US Drought Monitor.

The state’s drought has pushed the Platte River in some locations to near-record lows. The low levels also allow salt water from the Gulf of Mexico to creep up the Mississippi, and the Army Corps is now building a 1,500-foot-wide underwater levee to keep salt out of drinking water in Louisiana.

To stabilize commercial navigation conditions on the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, they are scheduling special water releases from Kentucky Dam on the Tennessee River and Barkley Dam on the Cumberland River to help low river level impacts.

The dams are releasing a consistent flow of water to help counteract the impact the ongoing drought is having on water levels. The low water levels on the Mississippi come at a crucial time of the year for transporting crops from the nation’s heartland.

America will shut down if we shut down the Mississippi River.  Water levels are near record lows, wreaking havoc on one of the U.S.’s most critical supply chains. Traffic jams and stuck barges are clogging up a critical artery of the U.S. economy as a prolonged drought pushes the Mississippi River’s water levels to near-record lows.

Around 500 million tons of supplies are ferried along the Mississippi River yearly with a trade value worth $130 billion, according to the Port of New Orleans, mainly agricultural products, like corn and soybeans, and fuel products.

The Mississippi River Basin produces more than 90% of U.S. agricultural exports, according to the National Park Service, and nearly 80% of the world’s grain exports.

But all that is coming to a standstill amid historic drought conditions that are making the river untraversable for most shipping barges. River levels are now at their lowest level in a decade after historically low rainfall in recent months, becoming the latest supply-chain snag to hit the U.S.

At least 2,000 barges were backed up along the river last week, Bloomberg reported. It’s the worst possible time for a drought in the Mississippi, as early fall is typically when the grain is harvested in the Mississippi Basin and sent down the river.
