Watchman

Cities often stationed watchmen on high walls or in watchtowers. Their job was to keep watch and warn the townspeople in ancient days of danger.

In times of war, the watchman in the watchtower would look as far as the eye could see into the distance. Finally, he would see the runner racing back to the city to report on the battle.

The word watcher or watchman is from the Greek word Gregorio, translated as a watch, which means to watch and keep awake.

Today it is the duty of every Christian to watch for the return of Jesus. And it is the duty of every preacher, teacher, and of all churches to warn their congregations of his return and warn those living in sin.

In many churches today, the leaders have fallen asleep spiritually and are more interested in the world’s pleasures and fleece their flocks for personal gain. We see this on TV with many of the preachers fleecing the flock.

The Bible teaches that we should be watchers.

1 Thessalonians 5:4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

1 Thessalonians 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but “let us watch” and be sober.

The scriptures in Isaiah 56 remind me of many preachers today.

Isaiah 56:10 His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.

Isaiah 56:11 Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.

Ezekial 3:18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at thine hand.

Ezekial 3:19 Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turns not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

Ezekial 3:20 Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling-block before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

Ezekial 3:21 Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.

Luke 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and CARES OF THIS LIFE, and so that day come upon you unawares.

Luke 21:35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Luke 21:36 Watch ye, therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

Matt 24:45-46 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

We must warn the people about the soon return of Jesus and the difficult times we live in and inspire them to abandon sin and turn their hearts towards God.

So let all of us who love the return of Jesus become watchers and warn others of the trying times we live in.
