Melting permafrost in the far reaches of Siberia awakened bacterial spores that had been dormant for almost a century, infecting thousands of reindeer in the region and eventually sickening dozens of people and killing a 12-year-old child.
Reanimating dormant microbes that, in some cases, have spent tens of thousands of years frozen in place. In response, the media, both traditional and social, has blared the headlines from the rooftops: The “zombie” viruses are coming.
The icy layers are melting at an alarming rate and uncovering organisms thought to be extinct, ancient viruses perfectly preserved for thousands of years. Scientists are discovering that these long-dormant microbes still possess the potential to infect and spread.
As global warming accelerates, the permafrost is thawing increasingly fast, with the potential for ancient viruses to become infectious again. This warning comes from an international team of researchers from Russia, Germany, and France.
The team includes genomics, microbiology, and geoscience experts, some of whom have been tracking these re-emerging viruses for almost a decade. Found so far is the 1918 Influenza virus in a woman buried nearly 80 years prior in a mass grave of influenza victims in Alaska.
The northern reaches of the planet are warming as much as four times faster than the global average. But even as the headlines grabbed hold of the zombies, the melting permafrost is hiding something else that is scary, and that is carbon.
There is an enormous amount of methane and other carbon sources trapped in the frozen ground. Only one of the nine tipping points of climate change is nasty domino effects that cause warming begets melting begets more warming.
There are about 8 million square miles, an area bigger than the entire United States, primarily in Russia, Canada, and Alaska, that contains an astonishing amount of carbon.
In just the top ten feet or so of frozen ground, there are around one trillion tons of carbon. Only 1% is equivalent to about a year’s worth of human-caused emissions.
The ongoing melt impacts military installations, pipelines, and drinking water supplies. As coastlines erode and change, entire towns in Alaska are being forced to relocate.
Nine tipping points affect the other like a dominion effect over and over again.
