Humanity is facing a bizarre new pandemic threat, scientists have warned. Ancient viruses frozen in the Arctic permafrost could one day be released by Earth’s warming climate and unleash a major disease outbreak, they say.
Researchers have identified strains of Methuselah microbes, also known as zombie viruses. These microbes are from the distant past, and some fear that they could cause a new global medical emergency. This emergency would not be caused by a new illness, but rather by a disease that has been around for a long time.
Scientists have initiated the planning of an Arctic monitoring network that can detect early instances of a disease caused by ancient micro-organisms. The network would also offer quarantine and expert medical treatment to those who are infected, in an attempt to curtail an outbreak and restrict infected individuals from leaving the area.
“Currently, the analysis of pandemic threats is primarily focused on diseases that could originate in the tropical regions and spread towards the north. However, there is not much attention given to a possible outbreak that could start in the far north and travel towards the south. This is a significant oversight, which needs to be addressed.” said the geneticist at Aix-Marseille University.
According to virologist of the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, there is a risk of viruses present in the permafrost that could potentially infect humans and cause a new disease outbreak. It is uncertain what kind of viruses are present in the permafrost, but there is a possibility that an ancient form of polio could trigger a disease outbreak.
In 2014, a team of scientists isolated live viruses in Siberia. They demonstrated that these viruses could still infect single-cell organisms even though they had been buried in permafrost for thousands of years. As a result, we must assume that similar events could occur in the future.
Last year’s research found various viral strains in different sites in Siberia, one of which was 48,500 years old. These strains could only infect amoebae and had no risk to humans.
Frozen viruses in the permafrost, such as poxviruses and herpesviruses, could cause illness in humans. Permafrost is frozen soil that can remain frozen for hundreds of thousands of years.
Permafrost in Canada, Siberia, and Alaska is melting due to climate change affecting the Arctic region faster than the global average. However, the most immediate risk is not from the melting permafrost itself.
Global warming is causing Arctic sea ice to disappear, leading to increased shipping, traffic, and industrial development in Siberia. Massive mining operations are planned, which will dig deep into the earth.
The Arctic’s changing land use due to oil and ore extraction from the thawing permafrost will release harmful pathogens, posing a severe threat to humanity.
