Jesus on the Cross, a Lesson of Forgiveness

The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross has granted us the greatest gift of all – forgiveness for our transgressions and a restored relationship with our Creator.

The act of forgiveness is a powerful lesson we can learn from Jesus. As Jesus hung on the cross, he forgave those who wronged him. This is the example of the power of forgiveness that Jesus taught us on the cross.

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Colossians 2:13  And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

Colossians 2:14  Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Colossians 2:15  And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

The defining characteristic of a Christian is their ability to accept God’s forgiveness and extend forgiveness to others who have wronged them.

Christians know that if they don’t forgive, neither will their Father in Heaven forgive them.

Matthew 6:14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

Matthew 6:15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Christians are human and need forgiveness throughout life. They can come to Jesus, who will speak to the Father on their behalf for forgiveness.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Christians forgive others in the same way that God forgives them through Jesus.

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

We demonstrate our Christ-like character by forgiving those who wrong us and showing them God’s love through us.

1 Corinthians13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not love,I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing.

1 Corinthians 13:3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not love, it profiteth me nothing.

Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
