New study predicts major threat to global food production

A recent study reveals that the productivity of agricultural labor could decrease to less than 40% of its full capacity by the end of this century in crucial food production regions like India and Pakistan. Rising global temperatures can affect farmers’ physical abilities, making it difficult for them to work efficiently.

The article states that researchers anticipate a decrease to 70% in several significant regions around the world, including Southeast and South Asia, West and Central Africa, and northern South America. This prediction is based on data gathered from over 700 heat stress trials, which involved observing individuals working in various conditions.

The benchmark is cool-climate work capacity. According to the study’s lead author, climate change will reduce crop yields, worsening food security.

“The impact of climate change on agriculture goes beyond just crops and livestock,” he explained. “The workers who are responsible for planting, tilling, and harvesting our food are also at risk due to heat exposure, which can reduce their ability to work effectively in the field. In addition to increased heat, drought also poses a threat to the future of agriculture.”

Experts warn that persistent droughts in many regions threaten food security. The warming world is causing more frequent heatwaves, prolonged droughts, increased flooding, and stronger hurricanes.

Scientists say climate change intensifies severe weather, making it more dangerous to communities. According to the study, taking adaptive measures for workers can increase their productivity by 5% to 10%.

One option is to shift their work schedules to nighttime or shaded areas. Another alternative is to introduce more agricultural machinery in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa that still highly depend on manual labor.

At present, scientists are researching new methods to enable plants to withstand extreme conditions of heat and drought. One such solution is the development of “heat-resistant” plants by the researchers.
