The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the fierce competition over semiconductors, which are crucial in dominating global technology and computing power as they serve as the central processing unit (CPU) of modern electronics.
The US and China are currently in a ‘chip war’ to become the leader in the multi-billion-dollar industry. Taiwan is at the center of this battle for the world’s most critical technology.
It’s worth noting that the United States is not the leader in the multi-billion-dollar industry. The single manufacturers is TSMC, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and Apple is its biggest customer.
The Taiwanese company currently dominates the semiconductor market to such an extent that OPEC’s 40% share of world oil production seems insignificant by comparison. In the event of its disruption, it would result in a massive economic crisis due to our inability to access the necessary chips.
China spends as much money on importing semiconductors as it does on importing oil. These chips are largely purchased from U.S. companies who profit greatly from selling to China. The United States is the largest global market and accounts for nearly 40 percent of the total value of this international supply chain.
Today, If you’re looking for the latest and most advanced chips for your smartphone or data center, it’s almost impossible to achieve this without utilizing different technologies from various countries. You will need software from the U.S., machine tools from the Netherlands, U.S., and Japan, ultra-purified chemicals from Japan, and manufacturing capabilities from Taiwan.
The issue is an interconnected international process. Merely three years ago, “Huawei”, the tech giant from China, was the second-largest customer for TSMC. However, due to concerns regarding espionage and national security, the Trump administration imposed stricter restrictions that prevented the company from acquiring chips developed in the U.S.
China taking over Taiwan would severely affect the global semiconductor supply chain. It could lead to a shortage of semiconductors impacting the production of everyday products such as cars, coffee makers, and microwaves, in addition to electronic devices.
Taiwan produces semiconductors used in F-35 fighter jets and various U.S. military weapons. The whole tech industry relies on these chips, making Taiwan a key battleground in the U.S.-China chip war.
China’s “Made in China 2025” plan to dominate global high-tech manufacturing poses a threat to the US, both economically and militarily due to its communist government.
TSMC will invest $12 billion in a new chip fabrication plant in Arizona by 2024. It can cost up to $25 billion to build one plant for chip production. China and the U.S. cannot overtake Taiwan’s production efforts anytime soon.
