Pentecost the Feast of Weeks

The Old Testament Feast of Weeks gets its name because it starts seven full weeks, or exactly 50 days, after the Feast of First fruits.

Since it takes place exactly 50 days after the previous feast, it is also known as “Pentecost,” meaning ” fifty ” in Greek.

The Feast of First Fruits, celebrated during the Passover, included the first fruits of the barley harvest. The Feast of Weeks celebrated the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Tabernacles involved offerings of the first fruits of the olive and grape harvests.

The Feast of Firstfruits was to be “two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah” which were made “of fine flour, baked with leaven.”

The offerings were to be made of the first fruits of that harvest. To the Jews, this time of celebration is known as Shavuot, which is the Hebrew word meaning “weeks.” To the Christians, we call it Pentecost.

Fifty days after Jesus’s resurrection and after ascending to heaven to sit at the right hand of God, Jesus sent the Holy Spirit as promised on Pentecost. The two wave loaves represent the time when the Messiah would make both Jew and Gentile be one in Him.

1 Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

1 Corinthians 15:53 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

At Pentecost, the disciples witness the birth of the “New Testament” church in the coming of the Holy Spirit to indwell all believers.

On that day, we received the first fruits of the Holy Spirit, and the Church began and became the first fruits unto God.

Romans 8:23 And not only they but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.

On that day of Pentecost is the miraculous speaking in foreign tongues, which enabled people from various language groups to understand the apostles’ message.

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

Acts 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them.

Acts 2:14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

Acts 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

Acts 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel,

Acts 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Acts 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit, and they shall prophesy:

Acts 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
