Long Delays at Panama Canal after Drought hits Global Shipping

The Panama Canal faces one of its most challenging periods due to a severe drought. With over 130 ships sitting at anchor off the coast of Panama, waiting their turn to transit the canal.

Some may sit here for ten days or more or will have to offload weight to get through the canal. This congestion results from a severe drought affecting Panama.

The number of ships waiting five days or longer continues to grow, further lengthening a bottleneck that will start to impact service reliability and cause shipment delays across the United States and Europe.

The effect on shipping has been significant, leading to weight restrictions and fewer daily crossings.

The height of the rainy season doesn’t arrive until October, but if the low rainfall numbers continue, the U.S. may need to brace for further disruptions to the supply chain.

“About 80% of our merchandise in trade is moved via vessel over the water,” said, the North American logistics leader for insurance brokerage and risk advisory firm Marsh. “So we actually should be concerned when we see those sorts of blockages. And, yes, it has global ramifications when you have a blockage in one part of the supply chain; the rest is automatically affected.”

But from a transportation standpoint beyond Panama, the next shoe to drop could be the Mississippi River,

During the past 30 days, rainfall along the southern Mississippi River has been below average. Some of the variances in rainfall are among the lowest since 1893.

This is not a good sign for supply chains or your holiday shopping.

The Panama Canal Administrator said, “The depth, the severity of this crisis is really typical. It is very high, so we think we must operate with drought restrictions between now and September 30 of next year.”
