Winter Olympics: China shows its hypocrisy to the world with Uyghur torchbearer

China’s move to thrust a young Uyghur athlete into the spotlight at the climax of the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony has placed her at the centre of longtime controversy over rights abuses in Xinjiang.

Dinigeer Yilamujiang, from the Uyghur minority from the region of Xinjiang is a 20-year-old cross-country skier smiling appearance as the final Olympic torchbearer on Friday along with 21-year-old biathlete Zhao Jiawen at the “Bird’s Nest” National Stadium in front of thousands of spectators and TV cameras showed the hyprocrisy of China.

Chinese diplomats shared videos on Twitter of her family clapping as they watched the ceremony on screen, some dabbing tears from their eyes.

Not even the Olympics being held in China and covered by the left NBC can excuse genocide on the Uyghurs. The Muslim minority group faces mass detention and sterilization and human rights abuses.

There are about 12 million Uyghurs, mostly Muslim that lives in China.

At least one million people from the mostly Muslim minority have been imprisoned in “re-education camps” in Xinjiang, campaigners say, and Chinese authorities have been accused of forcibly sterilising women and imposing forced labour in the area.

The museum’s Center for the Prevention of Genocide says there is now “a reasonable basis” to believe that previously alleged crimes against humanity of the Uyghurs.

“The Chinese government has done its best to keep information about crimes against the Uyghurs from seeing the light of day,” said Tom Bernstein, the chairman of the museum’s Committee on Conscience.

“The Chinese government must halt its attacks on the Uyghurs people and allow independent international monitors to investigate and ensure that the crimes have stopped.”

“The Chinese government’s assault on the Uyghurs community marked by the incarceration of between one and three million people as well as abuses such as forced sterilization, torture, sexual violence, and forced labor is alarming in scale and severity,” said Naomi Kikoler, director of the museum’s Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide.

“The damage inflicted upon Uyghurs individuals, families, and their community has left deep physical and emotional scars.

The trauma from these atrocities will harm generations of Uyghurs.” China’s U.N. Zhang denounced “the groundless accusations” and unfounded “lies” last month and accused the United States and other signatories of poisoning the atmosphere of cooperation and “using human rights as a pretext for political maneuvering to provoke confrontation.”
