Last week, a massive, extremely active sunspot released three X-class solar flares in less than 24 hours. Currently, the sunspot is growing and is now facing directly towards Earth. A period of unusual calm suggests that this dark spot could be preparing for another significant eruption.
Such an event could cause substantial damage to our planet, according to a report by Spaceweather.com.
A sunspot, numbered 1, appeared on the sun’s Earth-facing side on Feb. 18. It grew into a dark patch wider than our planet. On Feb. 21, sunspot 1 emitted two X-class flares with magnitudes of X1.7 and X1.8.
On Feb. 22, a sunspot caused a powerful X6.3 flare, the strongest in 6 years. The flares led to radio blackouts but didn’t create coronal mass ejections (CMEs) – magnetized plasma clouds that can collide with Earth’s magnetic shield.
If any of the significant explosions had sent a coronal mass ejection (CME) towards Earth, it could have potentially induced severe geomagnetic storms. Such storms can disturb the planet’s magnetic field, leading to the penetration of solar radiation into ground-based infrastructure, triggering impressive auroras in the skies, and causing satellites to fail. Since the occurrence of the three X-class flares, the size of AR3590 has continued to increase, almost doubling its original size.
A large sunspot, currently one of the largest of the current solar cycle that began in 2019, is pointing almost directly at Earth. If another significant X-class flare explodes from the sun and launches a CME, our planet will be on its path.
AR3590 is now around 60% the size of the monster sunspot that birthed the Carrington event, a massive solar storm in 1859 that is thought to be the largest solar storm in recorded history to hit Earth.
If a Carrington Event-level flare launched a CME at Earth today, it could cause long-term disruption to global power grids and wipe out most of the spacecraft in orbit around Earth, resulting in trillions of dollars worth of damage.
AR3590 is not large enough to trigger this type of solar storm, but even if it hurled a CME that was half as powerful at us, which is possible, it could still cause serious problems.
