Residents of one of the world’s largest cities may be mostly out of water by summer

Mexico City, the largest metropolitan area in North America with an estimated population of 22 million people, is currently facing a severe water crisis. The city’s infrastructure is already struggling with logistical issues, and the situation has been worsened by low rainfall and high temperatures.

The city has been rapidly extracting water from its underground aquifer without giving it enough time to replenish. This has resulted in the entire urban area sinking at an alarming rate of around 20 inches per year, as per recent research.

According to Christian Domínguez Sarmiento, a scientist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, droughts have become more severe due to climate change.

The high temperatures have caused the water in the Cutzamala system, which is a vital source of supply for the Valley of Mexico, including Mexico City, to evaporate.

Water is an essential element for our survival, as it not only hydrates us but also helps us cook, bathe, and maintain sanitation. A water commission official stated that the Cutzamala water system may not be able to supply Mexico City with water as early as June 26, if there is no significant rainfall.

However, some politicians deny the issue’s severity, and some have pointed out that the city would not be completely out of water everywhere.

Dry spells are affecting numerous cities and countries worldwide, and Mexico City could serve as a case study for other significant areas experiencing droughts. In recent years, areas such as California, Spain, and Brazil have seen troubling droughts.
