An Asteroid will come Incredibly Close to Earth

An asteroid will fly over the southern tip of South America on Thursday, 1/26/2023, in one of the closest approaches by a known near-Earth object ever recorded, according to NASA.

This small asteroid is estimated to be 11.5 to 28 feet across.

If it came closer to earth, it would turn into a fireball and largely disintegrate harmlessly in the atmosphere, with some of the bigger debris potentially falling as small meteorites.

The asteroid is estimated to be between 11.5 and 28 feet long, the size of a small pick-up truck or as large as a mid-size school bus.

The asteroid is 2200 miles above the earth’s surface, within the orbit of satellites, which orbit the Earth. The asteroid was discovered last Saturday by an amateur astronomer. An asteroid will come closer to earth than any other near-Earth object.

The asteroid is expected to make its near-miss pass over the southern tip of South America on Thursday at around 7:29 p.m. EST.
