Ukraine dispatched its first grain shipment since the start of Russia’s invasion on Monday, under a deal aimed at easing global food shortages.
Ukraine, one of the world’s largest grain exporters, to begin shipping some 18 million metric tons that Russia’s invasion in February has trapped in the country.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture predicts Ukraine will export 30.6 million metric tons of grains and seeds over the 2022-23 season, almost half the tonnage of the season before.
The ship departed the Odessa port carrying 26,000 metric tons of corn headed for Tripoli, Lebanon, according to Ukrainian officials and the Turkish government, which helped broker the deal.
The Sierra Leone-flagged bulk carrier, the Razoni, is expected to arrive in Istanbul on Tuesday, and then continue on its course following inspections. Before the war, Russia and Ukraine together accounted for almost a third of all global wheat exports.
Ukraine was also a major exporter of corn and barley. Global wheat prices have already fallen significantly in recent weeks from the record highs they hit following Russia’s invasion and are now close to their prewar levels.
But at roughly $8 a bushel, wheat remains more than double the price it was five years ago.
