If a massive asteroid was on a collision course with Earth, would you prefer to be informed? Moreover, how would you react if a life-threatening asteroid came within reach of hitting the planet, and we only discovered it days after it missed us?
Because it happened July 15th, 2023.
On July 15th, the Atlas Observatory in South Africa reported that they had spotted an asteroid that was approximately 200 feet in size. Unfortunately, the asteroid had already made its dangerously close journey past us by the time it was detected.
The asteroid 2023 NT1 passed by Earth at a distance of 60,000 miles. Although this may seem like a safe distance, it’s quite close considering the vast emptiness of space and the distance between our planet and the moon.
The Moon of the Earth typically stays at a distance of 238,855 miles from the planet, as estimated by NASA. Therefore, the massive asteroid that flew by the Earth did so at a distance equal to just one-fourth of the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
Astronomers are worried about the fact that 2023 NT1’s fly-by went undetected until it had already passed, not the amount of damage it could have caused.
NASA tracks 90% of near-earth objects larger than 460 feet since 2005, as assigned by the US Congress. The deadline to complete this task is by the end of 2020.
On June 30th, NASA reported detecting and tracking 32,266 near-Earth objects that were within 30 million miles of our planet. However, despite these efforts, they were unable to detect an asteroid named 2023 NT1. The reason for this failure is slightly concerning.
Astronomers missed 2023 NT1 because it approached Earth from a direction blocked by the Sun’s light. It was detected days later, raising concerns.
Forbes wrote, “It came from the same direction as the most destructive meteoroid to impact Earth in a century. Just like that asteroid that blew out windows in Chelyabinsk, Russia in 2013, no one saw this one coming.” The asteroid that passed the Earth was not particularly large on a cosmic scale. However, due to its size and approach, it became very difficult for astronomers to detect.
It’s not just the unexpected approach angle that we should be concerned about regarding 2023 NT1; as many as a million other asteroids of similar size could pose a potential danger to us. The European Space Agency provided this information, which The Independent quoted. Shockingly, 98.9% of these asteroids have not been identified yet.
Many believe in the Book of Revelations chapter 8, which tells of an asteroid hitting the earth.
Revelations 8:7 The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.
Revelations 8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
Revelations 8:9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
Revelations 8:10 And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;
Revelations 8:11 And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
Revelations 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
Revelations 6:13 And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
Revelations 6:14 And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
2 Peter 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
2 Peter 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
