Experts have warned that a potential bird flu pandemic, which could be “100 times worse than COVID,” may loom after a rare human case was discovered in Texas. The H5N1 avian flu has spread rapidly since a new strain was detected.
It is alarming that the virus has now been detected in mammals, with cattle herds across four states suffering from infections. Federal health officials have reported that a dairy worker in Texas has also contracted the virus.
For many years, this virus has been at the top of the pandemic list and has the potential to cause one. A researcher from Pittsburgh who specializes in bird flu stated that we are dangerously close to a pandemic.
“He pointed out that the H5N1 virus has been found in various species across the globe and has demonstrated the capability to infect various mammalian hosts, including humans. Therefore, he believes that this virus poses the most significant pandemic threat that is currently visible and omnipresent throughout the world.”
“He said this could be 100 times worse than COVID, or it could become so if it mutates and retains its high case fatality rate. If it mutates and infects humans, we can only hope the fatality rate decreases.”
According to the World Health Organization, since 2003, around 52% of humans who have contracted H5N1 have died. To put this in perspective, COVID currently has a fatality rate of less than 0.1% among those it infects. However, the fatality rate was around 20% at the start of the pandemic.
Some people may not exhibit noticeable symptoms, while others may experience severe and potentially fatal pneumonia. A dairy worker from Texas who contracted the disease reported experiencing redness in their eyes, which is consistent with conjunctivitis, as their only symptom, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The CDC stated that the patient was advised to isolate and is undergoing treatment with antiviral medication for flu. The discovery of the virus in cattle suggests it may be mutating.
If avian H5N1 influenza viruses gain the ability to spread efficiently among humans, large-scale transmission may occur due to the lack of immune defenses against H5 viruses in humans, warns the Food Safety Authority.
To prevent the spread of H5N1, the US is testing two vaccine viruses that appear to be well-matched.
