Why does Golgotha mean Place of the Skull?

The rock formation’s striking resemblance to a human skull is undeniable. It’s truly a sight to see.

Did you know that the site of Jesus’ crucifixion is referred to by two names? Calvary and Golgotha are the two names used to describe the exact location where the Son of God was crucified.

Golgotha is in the Hebrew language, Calvarius, where Calvary is derived in Latin.

After killing Goliath, David beheaded him and took his skull to Jerusalem. It is believed that the skull was buried on a hill named the Place of the Skull.

1 Samuel 17:54 Then David took the Philistine’s “Goliath’s” head and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his weapons in his tent.

David brought Goliath’s head to Jerusalem, and often, they would decapitate their enemy and then set them on a hill or a site that would display victory for all to see.

Just as Jesus was placed in the place of the skull for all to see and to show his victory over Satan.

Genesis 3:15 And I will put hostility between you “Satan” and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall crush your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

The prophetic significance of David’s victory over Goliath and Jesus’ crucifixion on Calvary is undeniable.

First, David’s victory over the giant Goliath and placing his skull on Calvary, then Jesus’s displacement on Calvary to show the world his victory over Satan, make this a prophetic place.

Colossians 1:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

Colossians 1:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
