Thanksgiving is a Time to be Thankful

The Thanksgiving holiday’s history in North America is rooted in English traditions dating from the Protestant Reformation.

The modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is traced to a well-recorded 1619 event in Virginia and a 1621 celebration at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

This American holiday feast dates back to November 1621, when the newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth for an autumn harvest celebration.

A Pilgrim wrote in his journal that the colony’s governor had a hunting mission in preparation for the three-day event.

The hunting party returned with turkeys and other birds, such as ducks, geese, and swans. Instead of bread-based stuffing, herbs, onions or nuts might have been added to the birds for extra flavor.

The pilgrim wrote that the Wampanoag Indians arrived with an offering of five deer.

Local vegetables likely appearing on the table include onions, beans, lettuce, spinach, cabbage, carrots, peas and Corn.

Fruits included blueberries, plums, grapes, gooseberries, raspberries and, cranberries.

For many Americans, the Thanksgiving meal includes roast turkey with stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

As President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nationwide thanksgiving celebration in America, marking November 26, 1789, as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God.
