North Korea’s people face “Famine”

End time Bible Ezekial 33:6 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.

Leader Kim Jong-un recently revealed at the ruling Workers’ Party committee that the nation’s people are dealing with “tense” food shortages and the price of the food that is available is rocketing.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which Kim has now called “grave”, has also seen the nation close its borders, shutting off trade from its neighbor China, and increasing an already difficult situation for the country as it is under numerous sanctions due to its nuclear program.

A packet of coffee can currently sell for more than $100, and staples such as potatoes, sugar, and flour have also been affected. Kim has blamed last year’s typhoons, which led to flooding and meant grain targets couldn’t be met.

The privileged elite which consists of 10% of North Koreans enjoy special status, and only members of these high castes are allowed to live in the capital Pyongyang. The rest of the population is barred from the capital and receives no special privileges such as additional rations or phone permits.

The system is based on two factors: your current position in society and your family’s history, both in terms of its social position and its loyalty to the country’s leadership.

Pyongyang elite can take home thousands of dollars a month, Housing, food, and other essentials are subsidized to the point of being free for the elite, who enjoy super-generous rations, while the average resident of the capital earns $30-$40. The vast majority of the population earns next to nothing and has no special ration privileges.

North Korea’s 10% have constant access to fine food, much of it free of charge. The elite can also dine at Pyongyang’s top restaurants. Lavish Korean barbecue banquets are popular and the capital even boasts a fried chicken joint, as well as European-style cafés. Kim managed to spend a whopping $921,712 on Brazilian coffee alone in 2016.

The rest of the population get by on extremely meager rations, which were slashed to just 300g per person a day in May 2019 following the worst harvest in more than a decade. But even in times of good harvest North Korean citizens are said to only live off 500g of food per day.

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has estimated that the country is lacking 860,000 tons of food, the equivalent of two months’ supply.

Estimates suggest 78% of the population are undernourished, and 40% of children and most pregnant women are malnourished.

Most North Koreans live in poorly maintained houses or tenement apartment blocks with very little basic utilities such as central heating or running water. Many people have to collect firewood in order to cook or heat their homes and fetch water from public taps.

While Kim owns 17 palaces throughout the country to choose from and even his own private island. The elite lives in the capital’s most luxurious accommodations.

The majority of the North Korean population is barred from owning phones. North Koreans are also stopped from accessing the World Wide Web.

While the elite pampers their pets a stray dog is more likely to end up on the dinner table than be preened and pampered as a pet.
