An explosion occurred on the sun, which released a huge plume of energized particles that traveled at a speed of 900,000mph through space. This explosion caused blackouts in Australia and South Asia. Reports have emerged on Tuesday morning, indicating that ham radio operators and mariners have experienced disruptions in these two regions.
A long-duration flare was released on Monday and caused a solar storm that reached our planet today. There is a 45% chance of more communication disruptions in the coming days due to this event. The flare was classified as an M-class, which can cause small to moderate radio blackouts on the daylight side of the Earth.
The alert is mainly for frequencies used by aviation communication, government time stations, weather stations, amateur radio, and citizens band services.
People who depend on GPS/GNSS services, particularly at higher latitudes, as well as precision farmers and those utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for activities such as reconnaissance, search and rescue, or aerial photography, are typically impacted by solar flares. Strong M-class flares, similar to the one observed on Monday, can trigger a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), which are large clouds of plasma and magnetic field that emanate from the sun.
Billions of tons of corona material from the sun’s surface has been ejected in a coronal mass ejection (CME). CMEs can cause a geomagnetic storm, disrupting Earth’s magnetosphere and orbiting satellites. Keith Strong, a solar physicist, says the CME may impact Earth, but it is located far south on the sun, so it may pass under us.
According to predictions from EarthSky, in the next 24 hours, there is a 99% chance of C-class flares, a 60% chance of M-class flares, and a 25% chance of X-class flares. C-class flares are small in size and have little impact on Earth. On the other hand, M-class flares are major events that can cause radio blackouts worldwide, and X-class flares can result in long-lasting radiation storms in the upper atmosphere.
The unstable sunspot was identified as AR3575, which delivered the M flare toward Earth.
