Growing in the Word, You Grow as a Christian

If you don’t read and study the Bible, your spiritual growth will be hindered.

This is why many Christians attend church once a week for an hour and have no further interaction with God except for saying grace or a brief bedtime prayer.

Not reading the Bible can lead to giving in to sinful desires.

Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Romans 6:2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Galatians 15:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 15:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Galatians 15:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 15:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Galatians 15:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Reports indicate that over 75% of individuals who attend church do not read or study the Bible.

Many people form opinions about the Bible based on sources like TV or books, but fail to verify them against scripture.

The Bible instructs us to form our beliefs based on the teachings of scripture.

Many people in the modern world are neglecting the most crucial aspect of their lives, which is their salvation. However, the scriptures instruct us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

The act of actively listening to the Word of God is what leads everyone to Christ.

Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

The Bible teaches how beautiful the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace are.

Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they are sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Faith is obtained by hearing the Word of God. We are born again through the Word. As newborns, we take in the milk of the Word and grow thereby.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

The Word of God is alive and works within us, revealing our innermost thoughts and desires to those who study it.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Word is God-breathed; our doctrine should be based on it, used for reproof as well as correction, and it is our instruction on how to be righteous.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2 Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

We study the Word in order to be approved by God by rightly dividing the Word. We do this little by little, precept upon precept, and concept upon concept.

As you study the Bible, you will discover that verses are interconnected and each subject is explained throughout the text.

2 Timothy 2:15 “Study” to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

As you progress in your study of the Bible, you will encounter various levels of comprehension. The Bible can be compared to an onion with multiple layers; regardless of how much you believe you understand it, there will always be additional truths to uncover. The profundity of the Bible is boundless.

Jesus will say to many that he never knew them because they did not know him.

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work sin.
