Russia is suspending an agreement that allowed Ukraine to export grain which threatens the global food supply.
It will be no shipments to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, where people are already suffering from food scarcity and high prices.
Ukraine and Russia are both major global suppliers of wheat, barley, sunflower oil, and other affordable food products that developing nations rely on.
Food insecurity worldwide is growing as developing countries also struggle with severe weather, conflict, and economic crises. Finding suppliers outside Ukraine that are farther away also could raise costs.
“Countries such as Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia are dependent on food imports from Ukraine, so it does hamper availability and accessibility to food,” said the International Rescue Committee’s regional emergency director for East Africa.
Before the war, Somalia imported 90 percent of its wheat from Russia and Ukraine, while Ethiopia imported 42 percent. Kenya, which also imports oil, iron, steel, and fertilizers from Russia and Ukraine, imports 44 percent of its wheat from both countries.
“It’s been a buildup: From COVID to inflation, to drought, to war in Ukraine.”
About 257 million people or one in five people in Africa suffer from hunger.
