Transformers are devices that convert high-voltage power from power plants to a safer level for distribution. These devices are custom-made in China. Experts have pointed out that while the US is busy securing its networks, China has the ability and opportunity to sabotage the equipment we rely on them to manufacture.
There has been a discovery of a Chinese-made transformer that has a hidden electronic access point to our electric grid.
Then-President Donald Trump signed an executive order in May 2020, prohibiting the importation, acquisition, installation, or transfer of bulk-power systems from foreign adversaries.
Currently, there are over 200 large Chinese transformers in the electric grid of the United States. One of these transformers is responsible for providing 10% of the power that goes to New York City, while another one supplies between 18 to 20% of the power that goes to Las Vegas.
Experts emphasize that safeguarding our critical infrastructure requires collaboration between engineers and cybersecurity defenders.
The critical infrastructure components are old and vulnerable to extreme weather events, as seen in Texas.
Experts are warning that if these systems go offline – whether it’s malicious or unintentional – it could take months or even years to get them back up and running.
