Should you be Worried about Bird Flu? Here are the Latest Updates

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges states to prepare for additional bird flu cases by readying to test at-risk individuals for the virus but emphasizing that the general public’s risk remains low.

 A Texas dairy worker caught avian influenza, also known as bird flu. The disease has spread among cattle in Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, and Ohio. Bird flu has also been detected in wild geese in New York City parks.

Bird flu, or Influenza A (H5N1), is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal virus mainly affecting birds and poultry. It can occasionally infect other animals if they eat infected birds or drink contaminated water.

Viruses mutate frequently, especially when they spread. Recent variants may infect other animals, including cattle.

Bird flu rarely affects humans, but when it does, it usually stays confined to one person with close contact with an infected animal. It can cause mild to severe sickness, including pneumonia and sometimes fatal lung inflammation.

Since 2020, there have been 26 confirmed cases of a disease in humans, seven of which were fatal. The CDC considers the risk low but has asked state health departments to prepare for more cases.

The USDA confirmed nine infected dairy cattle herds in Texas, three in Kansas, four in New Mexico, and one in Idaho, Michigan, and Ohio. Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai confirmed bird flu cases in New York City parks and green spaces. In Ottawa, Canada, health officials reported the death of a pet dog due to bird flu after chewing on an infected goose.

A person in Texas has contracted bird flu after developing pink eye, marking the second-ever known case of the virus in the United States. The infected person is only experiencing eye inflammation and is being treated with antiviral medication. The first case was reported in 2022 when a poultry farm worker recovered after experiencing mild fatigue.

The CDC is prioritizing the safety of dairy and poultry farm workers. State health officials have been asked to ensure bird flu tests are available, communicate with veterinarians and agriculture department officials, and report any challenges.

Farm workers are at higher risk of zoonotic infection due to their proximity to infected animals, but city dwellers can also be exposed. The Icahn School of Medicine warns that the interaction between animals and humans can spread germs. The CDC says the risk for the general public remains low..

Bird flu rarely spreads from person to person. For it to become widespread, the virus must undergo specific mutations that it has not yet undergone. A mild case of bird flu was detected in a person, but it has not mutated to become highly contagious. Bird flu has been found on a few US farms in egg-laying chickens and dairy cows.

The USDA assures the public that commercial milk supply is safe since all milk products undergo pasteurization, which can kill harmful viruses and bacteria such as bird flu. However, the CDC advises against consuming unpasteurized milk or cheese due to the risk of infections like listeria.

CDC says eating eggs is safe as cooking them kills any virus. Farms can’t sell products from sick animals, so contaminated food in stores is unlikely. Bird flu may cause food prices to rise.

Egg prices have risen due to a decrease in the chicken supply. Milk prices may increase. Two vaccines are good matches for current bird flu strains. The CDC has a stockpile of vaccines for A(H5N1) and A(H7N9) viruses.

Antiviral drugs may treat bird flu, but some Asian variants are resistant. Cook poultry and eggs to 165˚F. Drink only pasteurized milk and avoid undercooked food from possibly infected animals.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
