Cases of Leprosy Surge in Central Florida CDC Warns Travelers It’s Now Endemic

An endemic refers to a disease or condition regularly found among particular people or in a certain area. It differs from a disease that becomes a pandemic when it spreads beyond a region to infect large numbers of people worldwide.

Florida is at the forefront of a leprosy outbreak, with nearly one-fifth of leprosy cases in the U.S. originating from the state, a research letter recently published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

The disease, mentioned in prominent biblical accounts, is characterized by lesions that primarily affect the skin and peripheral nervous system.

You can read about it in Leviticus 13.

It’s a rare disease in the U.S. but has been growing steadily and constantly lately. Infection with leprosy is rare, as 95% of people are naturally immune.

Standard antibiotics can be used to treat it.

The modern term for leprosy is Hansen’s disease. One hundred fifty-nine new cases were reported in the U.S. in 2020, the most recent year for data.

In North America, the number of international migrants has significantly increased in recent years, which, the CDC suggests, may explain the rise in leprosy incidence in the historically nonendemic area.

Leprosy is typically spread through extended close contact with an untreated infected person.

Casual contact does not lead to infection.

You can’t catch leprosy from shaking hands, hugging, or sitting beside someone during a meal or on the bus.
