Ford was planning a $3.6 billion plant for EV battery manufacturing, providing 2,500 jobs for the Berry Hill, Virginia, region. But Governor Glenn Youngkin told Ford to go somewhere else.
That’s because Ford’s massive investment was being made in conjunction with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology. It’s the largest battery manufacturer in the world.
In December, a Youngkin spokesperson told the Detroit News:
“While Ford is an iconic American company, it became clear that this proposal would serve as a front for the Chinese Communist party, which could compromise our economic security and Virginians’ personal privacy.”
Youngkin campaigned he’d bring economic development and manufacturing jobs to rural Virginia. “Virginians can be confident that companies with known ties to the Chinese Communist Party won’t receive a leg up from the Commonwealth’s economic incentive packages.”
Younkin’s spokesperson added.“When the potentially damaging effects of the deal were realized, the plant proposal never reached a final discussion stage.”
In Florida, its governor was demanding the state legislature ban Chinese entities from purchasing land.
Already China owns and controls almost 192,000 acres of farmland in the United States.
In early January, a Chinese scientist pleaded guilty to attempting to commit economic espionage against the U.S. in yet another attempt by Beijing to gain global economic supremacy by whatever means necessary.
U.S. officials have assessed that China has stolen between $200 billion and $600 billion of U.S. trade secrets yearly since the early 2000s. The leaking of economic secrets translates to a loss of between $4 trillion and $12 trillion over the past 20 years.
Members of Congress need to revisit the full range and scope of the Chinese Communist Party’s foreign-technology-and-science-acquisition programs and address them in the bill since the Republicans are in control of the house. Beijing’s ambition is to be the world’s leading power.
That China-affiliated corporation purchased farmland in North Dakota is just a stone’s throw from high-capability military bases. The purchase raises the possibility that the Chinese government could use the farmland as a launching pad for espionage under the guise of operating a business.
Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) joined 50 of his colleagues in September 2022 in sending a letter to U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Austin Lloyd, U.S. Department of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack raising concerns over the recent acquisition of farmland near a U.S. military installation by a Chinese-based manufacturer with close links to the Chinese Communist Party.
