National Day of Prayer in the United States

The National Day of Prayer in the United States will be May 4th, 2023.

The National Day of Prayer was created as an annual observance by a joint congressional resolution in 1952 and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. It is held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people to pray for the nation.

The theme is chosen each year by the National Day of Prayer Task Force, a Christian nonprofit organization that helps organize and coordinate prayers for our nation throughout the country on this annual observance.

This year’s theme verse for the National Day of Prayer is taken from the second part of James 5:16, found in the Bible. “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Ever since our nation’s founding, our nation’s leaders have always called for days of fasting, prayer, and thanksgiving. Prayer has been a part of daily life for centuries.

In the Colonies under British rule,  observances in the fall called for prayer and thanksgiving, while in the spring or summer called for prayer and fasting.

The fall observance was established by President Abraham Lincoln as the Thanksgiving holiday in 1863. The spring observance was established by President Harry S. Truman in 1952 as the National Day of Prayer.

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

I believe that a Christian should pray daily, not just a day of prayer.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

America was the country that spread the Gospel to the world, and because of that, it was a light unto all nations, but now it needs prayer and evangelization because its light is just a flicker and is about to go out.

Matthew 6:7  But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.

John 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us.

1 John 5:15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
