Record-Smashing Heat in the World’s Oceans

A continuing surge in ocean temperatures throughout 2024 raises concerns for the climate and its impact on people and wildlife.

The temperature is high. Over 90% of the extra heat caused by human-made global warming is in the ocean. Since the 1980s, ocean waters have absorbed a quarter of our carbon dioxide pollution.

Due to rising water temperatures, fish populations like mackerel are moving towards the earth’s poles or deeper waters in order to regulate their body temperature.

High-latitude areas could see a 30%-70% increase in valuable species due to climate change. However, in the Mediterranean, invasive rabbit fish and lionfish are harming the ecosystem and fishing industry.

Higher temperatures are linked to Vibrio, a marine bacteria causing vibriosis in humans. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and death. Oceans absorbing CO2 are becoming acidic, making it hard for creatures to maintain their shells and skeletons.

Warmer water holds less oxygen, restricting marine life and contributing to rising sea levels through thermal expansion. Higher ocean and air temperatures will likely decrease the amount of sea ice worldwide.

Melting ice in Antarctica is not just affecting Emperor penguins, but it is also feared that it will weaken the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The AMOC is a system of currents, including the Gulf Stream, which plays a crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate. Warmer waters can also cause coral to bleach and even die.

Coral reefs are home to hundreds of thousands of marine species, providing them with food, shelter, nurseries, and breeding grounds. If the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets remain unchanged, they will melt and cause a significant rise in sea levels.

This increase in sea levels could lead to the development of hurricane-type storms in regions that are not typically prone to them.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
