A Texas farm worker has become the second confirmed case of bird flu in humans in the United States. The person reported only one symptom: redness in the eye or conjunctivitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that this is one of the potential signs of bird flu in humans.
During an outbreak of the H7N7 avian influenza strain in the Netherlands in the early 2000s, 89 patients tested positive. Among them, 78 presented with conjunctivitis as their main symptom.
In the US, the first person to test positive for bird flu had only one symptom. According to the CDC, the patient from Colorado reported fatigue for a few days as their sole indicator.
One of the possible indications of bird flu in humans is a fever, which is a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. However, the CDC notes that a fever might not always be present, and experiencing a general sense of feverishness could also be a symptom.
Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, can mimic the symptoms of regular flu in humans. The CDC has stated that the virus can cause flu-like upper respiratory symptoms such as cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.
It is possible for bird flu illness to begin with common flu-like symptoms, but it can worsen and cause other issues. This may lead to gut problems such as nausea, belly pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Additionally, seizures are a less common but possible symptom of bird flu in humans, according to the CDC.
This is because the virus can cause changes in the brain or nervous system as it worsens. You may notice alterations in behavior, thinking, or even organ function. Seizures are possible in severe cases.
