The founder of Scripps Research Translational Institute has noted that the transmission of the disease to cows is far more extensive than what we have been led to believe.”

The FDA confirmed that the dairy supply is safe, but more testing is needed to ensure that pasteurized milk remains safe to consume. The agency stated that additional testing is required to determine the presence of pathogens and their infectiousness.

The FDA is reminding consumers not to consume raw milk as it may contain harmful viruses, such as H5N1. The agency recommends that milk manufacturers and sellers do not use milk from cows showing symptoms of illness, including those infected with avian influenza viruses or exposed to those infected with avian influenza viruses, to make raw milk products, including raw milk cheese.

The FDA’s recommendation is based on the limited information available about the possible transmission of the H5N1 virus through raw milk.

According to the CDC, the risk of bird flu spreading to the public is still low. Only one human case has been linked to this particular outbreak, and it is the second confirmed case of bird flu in the country.

In 2022, a person in Colorado was directly exposed to infected poultry, which was the first case of its kind. The agency explains that bird flu viruses typically do not infect humans, and there have been no reports of human-to-human transmission of avian influenza viruses in the United States.
