Authorities are warning residents and visitors to avoid chasing or catching birds and to wash their hands thoroughly after coming into contact with bird droppings.
This precaution is necessary because humans may contract a virus. A farmer in Texas was recently diagnosed with the virus, making it only the second case in the United States’ history.
Birds, including a chicken, tested positive for the virus in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, Manhattan. Each human case increases the risk of virus mutation.

A Texas patient had mild symptoms with only inflammation of the eyeball. They are recovering well at home and did not pass on the disease. Doctors are on high alert for more cases among farm workers as mild symptoms may make it difficult to detect infections.
Twenty cattle herds in Texas, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, and Ohio are infected with a disease. One mutation in Texas was not concerning, as it has been seen before in mammal infections.
The virus spreading to cattle has uncertain origins. It could be due to feed made from crushed chicken carcasses or transmitted through ‘poultry litter,’ which is a mixture of poultry waste. The virus may have also spread through milking machines for cows that were not disinfected between uses.
