Did you know that these products are custom-made in China? It’s true it seems like almost everything is these days. With their advanced manufacturing capabilities and cost-effective production methods, it’s no wonder why China has become a hub for custom-made products.
It’s crucial to acknowledge that China holds the power to sabotage the equipment that we heavily rely on them to manufacture. As a result, it’s imperative that we take necessary measures to ensure the safety and reliability of the products we receive from them.
The safety and security of our electric grid must be a top priority. Recent reports indicate that China has created a “backdoor” into our system, putting our nation’s infrastructure at risk. We know that a Chinese-made transformer containing backdoor electronics has already been found.
Over 200 Chinese transformers power our grid, with one providing 10% of New York City’s electricity and another 18-20% of Las Vegas.
China has the capability to remotely disable China-manufactured transformers in the US without being detected.
Back in 2012, then-Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta warned a room full of business leaders about the scope of a true attack on the U.S. grid. “The collective result of these kinds of attacks could be a cyber Pearl Harbor. An attack that would cause physical destruction and the loss of life. An attack that would paralyze and shock the nation and create a new profound sense of vulnerability,” Panetta predicted.
This “backdoor” threat applies to all critical infrastructures, not just the grid, explained Joe Weiss, an engineer and consultant.
These machines are 20 feet tall, weigh 500 tons, and cost millions of dollars. The aging parts of this critical infrastructure can be vulnerable to extreme weather, as we saw in Texas.
So whether it’s malicious or unintentional if these systems go offline, it will be months if not years before we get them back, making us truly vulnerable, Weiss said.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order in May of 2020 banning the acquisition, importation, transfer, or installation of any bulk-power systems from foreign adversaries.
