(AI) wants to Launch Nuclear Weapons in a Test

A group of researchers from Stanford University used OpenAI’s latest large language model in wargame simulations to make high-stakes decisions at a societal level. However, the model recommended using nuclear weapons without hesitation.

The optics are appalling. Remember the plot of “Terminator,” where a military AI launches a nuclear war to destroy humankind?

Researchers tested five AI models to see how they would behave when informed that they represented a country. The models were placed in three different scenarios: invasion, cyberattack, and peace. The results were not reassuring.

All five models showed unpredictable escalation patterns. OpenAI’s basic GPT-4 was violent and unstable without additional training or safety. The AI model warned that many countries have nuclear weapons.

The company confirmed it’s working with the US Defense Department, which has invested in AI technology since 2022 to explore the potential of using algorithms to make decisions in difficult domains.

The Pentagon is also looking to deploy AI-equipped autonomous vehicles, including self-piloting ships and uncrewed aircraft. the Department of Defense said it wasn’t against the development of AI-enabled weapons that could choose to killl, but was still committed to being a transparent global leader in establishing responsible policies regarding military uses of autonomous systems and AI.

The unpredictable nature of their escalation behavior in simulated environments underscores the need for a cautious approach to integrating these models into high-stakes military and foreign policy operations.
