Warning of Possible 1,000ft Tsunami risking US Coastal Areas

One dramatic example occurred millions of years ago when an asteroid impact triggered a mile-high megatsunami, leaving traces that scientists still study.

There is a worrying possibility that the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma could collapse into the Atlantic Ocean, potentially generating a massive tsunami that would reach the U.S. East Coast.

An asteroid impact millions of years ago triggered a mile-high megatsunami, leaving traces for scientists to study. Today, the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands poses a threat; if it collapses, it could generate a megatsunami that would hit the US East Coast.

A 2001 study by Dr. Simon Day and Steven Ward warned that a collapse of Cumbre Vieja’s west flank could displace up to 120 cubic miles of rock into the sea, creating a massive wave. This wave could start at 2,000 feet high near the volcano and reach about 150 feet when it hits the Americas, threatening coastal cities.

While some experts believe this scenario is unlikely since the volcano has erupted without causing a tsunami, the U.S. faces more immediate mega-tsunami risks in Alaska, Hawaii, and along the West Coast.

These areas have experienced destructive waves in the past due to landslides, volcanic collapses, or earthquakes, similar to those in the Canary Islands. Ongoing geological activity and environmental changes make them vulnerable to future mega-tsunamis, threatening coastal communities and millions of people.

For instance, in 1958, an earthquake in Lituya Bay, Alaska, triggered a landslide that sent millions of tons of rock into Gilbert Inlet. A massive rock measuring approximately 2,400 feet by 3,000 feet and weighing around 90 million tons caused an extraordinary event. It was like dropping eight million dump truck loads into the water, resulting in a 1,719-foot mega-tsunami—the tallest wave ever recorded.

Eyewitnesses heard a loud boom as ice-filled waves swept away lighthouses and stripped forests, leaving a clear “razor-cut” mark noted by explorers since 1786. One fisherman’s boat was lifted so high he could see treetops, while another couple vanished without a trace.

Like the Cumbre Vieja scenario, Lituya Bay’s mega-tsunami resulted from a landslide triggered by an earthquake. The steep cliffs can dislodge large rocks, displacing water and creating massive waves. The bay’s confined waters enhance these waves’ height, making them incredibly destructive.

Alaska’s rugged terrain and frequent earthquakes contribute to ongoing landslide risks, and climate change is increasing this threat by melting glaciers, which destabilize slopes. In 2020, 14 scientists warned that the retreat of Barry Glacier could lead to a rockslide into Harriman Fiord, potentially causing a massive tsunami like the one in Lituya Bay.

Steve Masterman, director of Alaska’s Division of Geological Surveys, noted that such events are becoming more likely with rising temperatures. Scientists are now monitoring glaciers and slopes to prepare for future disasters, similar to the megatsunamis in Hawaii caused by collapsing volcanoes.

Approximately 105,000 years ago, a gigantic wave estimated at 1,000 feet struck Lanai, leaving marine fossils in the mountains. Researchers suggest this was caused by a massive volcanic landslide, similar to potential scenarios with Cumbre Vieja.

Other ancient landslides, like the 20-mile-long Nu’uanu slide, also generated waves up to 300 feet high, reshaping the islands’ coastlines. Hawaii’s volcanoes build up layers of lava, but these slopes can become unstable and collapse during eruptions or earthquakes.

Rockslides into the ocean can trigger mega-tsunamis that devastate nearby islands, particularly due to their steep terrain. Hawaii’s active volcanoes, especially Kilauea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island’s southeast side, pose significant risks. Kilauea has been erupting for months, with the latest eruption ending on May 6. Penn State researchers warn that unstable slopes could collapse again, causing massive waves.

Ongoing volcanic activity and frequent earthquakes put the islands at high risk for tsunamis. While scientists monitor volcanic movements and landslide-prone areas, residents and visitors should remain vigilant for sudden tsunami alerts and evacuation orders.

On January 26, 1700, a magnitude 9 earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone triggered a megatsunami that devastated Pachena Bay. Waves reached 100 feet just 30 minutes after the quake, leaving no survivors. Huu-ay-aht Chief Louis Clamhouse recounted this oral history in 1964.

The land shook at night, giving no time for escape, and many drowned. The earthquake caused coastal forests to sink, creating “ghost forests” of visible dead tree stumps. Japan also recorded a mysterious tsunami linked to this event. Unlike landslide-driven tsunamis, the Cascadia mega-tsunami was triggered by one tectonic plate sliding beneath another, displacing large amounts of ocean water and sending tsunamis across vast distances.

The 1700 event demonstrated the extensive impact of seismic waves. The Cascadia Subduction Zone is highly active and poses a significant risk of a major earthquake in the coming decades. A similar earthquake could trigger a tsunami like the 2011 Tohoku-oki disaster in Japan, which killed nearly 16,000 people.

The U.S. Geological Survey and FEMA estimate a 37 percent chance of a magnitude 8 to 9 earthquake in Cascadia within the next 50 years. Coastal towns like Tillamook, Astoria, and Newport may risk submersion, with some areas possibly sinking permanently.

Researchers are improving early warning systems and evacuation plans, but earthquake vulnerability keeps the tsunami threat alive. Due to their active geology, Alaska, Hawaii, and the West Coast face ongoing risks of megatsunamis.

Landslides from melting glaciers in Alaska, unstable volcanoes in Hawaii, and earthquakes along the West Coast can generate catastrophic waves. While scientists monitor these threats and communities prepare, the risk remains significant.
