The sun has unleashed its most potent solar flare of the year, leading to worldwide radio blackouts.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. ET, a massive X2.7-class solar flare erupted from a newly emerging area known as AR4087. X-class flares are the most intense on the solar storm scale and can disrupt communications, damage satellites, and even threaten power grids on Earth.
Solar flares form from sunspots, dark, cooler areas on the Sun’s surface with intense magnetic activity. When this energy is released, it creates powerful bursts of plasma and radiation that travel into space at the speed of light.
When aimed at Earth, these powerful high-energy waves can ionize the upper atmosphere, triggering radiation storms that disrupt high-frequency radio signals and threaten technology-dependent systems. On Tuesday, a solar flare was classified as X2.7, which puts it on the lower end of the most dangerous category of solar flares.
However, it was still powerful enough to affect large areas of the planet. Experts caution that additional flares may occur as sunspot AR4087 rotates into direct alignment with Earth in the coming days, raising the likelihood of more solar storms.
The flare emitted X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation that reached Earth at light speed, quickly ionizing the upper atmosphere. This burst of radiation caused electrons to detach from molecules, creating an electrically charged layer.
The solar flare disrupted high-frequency radio signals, causing communication blackouts for radio operators in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, which were on the daylight side of Earth during the event. Experts expect additional solar flares next week as sunspot AR4087 rotates to face Earth directly.
“This is becoming increasingly intense as this active region moves closer into view,” declared aurora chaser Vincent Ledvina in an early Wednesday morning post on X. After the X-class flare, the sunspot unleashed another powerful burst of energy: an M5.3-class solar flare.
“We need to pay attention to what this active region will deliver in the coming days,” Ledvina emphasized. Just before 7:20 AM ET on Wednesday morning, sunspot AR4087 released yet another solar flare, measuring an impressive M7.74.
In May, representatives from government agencies participated in a two-day tabletop exercise that exposed significant weaknesses in America’s preparedness for a severe solar storm.
Participants simulated the effects of giant coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are larger and more impactful than solar flares heading toward Earth. These massive charged particles take days to arrive.
When celestial bodies enter the Earth’s atmosphere, they can disrupt the magnetic field and cause geomagnetic storms, leading to technological chaos.
Participants in a recent exercise recognized that current space weather forecasting limitations hindered timely decision-making. This highlighted the need to enhance forecasting technologies so the United States can better prepare for solar storms.
