Scientists at the world’s largest particle accelerator have proposed plans for a larger successor to enhance research into the mysteries of physics.
The proposed FCC will have a circumference of 56.5 miles (91 km), over three times that of the LHC, and will be located 200 meters (656 feet) underground in the Swiss-French region. The FCC will perform high-precision experiments in the mid-2040s to explore established physics.
A second phase, scheduled for 2070, will involve high-energy collisions of protons and heavy ions to “open the door to the unknown,” according to a research director from Italy’s National Institute of Nuclear Physics.

The blueprint outlines the proposed plan, environmental impact, scientific goals, and costs for a project that could start in the mid-2040s at an estimated $16 billion. Independent experts will review it before CERN’s member countries vote in 2028.
