US Military Resources sent to Middle East for possible Iran Attack

The United States is reallocating military resources, including ships, to the Middle East due to Israel’s strikes on Iran and a potential retaliatory attack by Tehran, according to two U.S. officials on Friday.

The Navy has ordered the destroyer USS Thomas Hudner to head towards the Eastern Mediterranean and has instructed a second destroyer to also proceed so it can be deployed if the White House requires assistance.

President Donald Trump is convening his National Security Council principals to address the situation. Two U.S. officials spoke anonymously to provide details that had not been previously disclosed.

The regional forces have been taking precautionary measures for days, including allowing military dependents to voluntarily depart from bases in anticipation of strikes and to ensure the safety of personnel in case of a large-scale response from Tehran.

Typically, approximately 30,000 troops are stationed in the Middle East. However, this number rose to as high as 43,000 last October due to ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as continuous attacks on commercial and military ships in the Red Sea by Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen.

The Hudner, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, is fully equipped to defend against ballistic missiles. On October 1, 2024, U.S. Navy destroyers decisively launched approximately a dozen interceptors to protect Israel from an aggressive assault, as over 200 rockets were fired by Iran.

Iran is poised to retaliate decisively. It has issued a strong warning of a “hard slap” against the US for its backing of Israel, and the UK has swiftly confirmed its total non-involvement in Rising Lion.

The primary targets would likely be U.S. bases in the Gulf. However, attacking these bases could trigger a larger conflict with the U.S., which would benefit Israel and be a temptation Iran might not be able to resist. Such a conflict could ultimately lead to the collapse of the Islamic regime in Tehran.

Iran aims to disrupt Gulf shipping and raise oil prices, benefiting its allies in the Kremlin. It will also continue training and funding militant groups for global attacks.

Meanwhile, Israel’s actions in Gaza, resulting in over 50,000 Palestinian deaths with Western-supplied weapons, have fueled anger across the Islamic world.

Iran aims to channel its anger and establish itself as a nation willing to sacrifice for the fight against what it refers to as the “Zionist entity.”

This process will take time, but Iran’s response is expected to be calculated and will have global implications, potentially resulting in significant violence.
