Missiles fired by North Korea raises tensions with South

On Thursday, North Korea defiantly launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, as confirmed by the South Korean military.

This provocative act follows a stern warning issued just a week ago by Pyongyang, stating that joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States would incur a “dear price.”

The North Korean missiles unequivocally flew approximately 360 kilometers, landing in the East Sea,” stated the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). They unmistakably detected the missiles launched from the Pyongyang area. Nevertheless, no further details, such as the number of missiles fired, were provided.

If launched towards the south, the projectile has the potential to impact major South Korean cities like Seoul and Daejeon, as well as important military installations in Gyeryong and Gunsan.

The South Korean military has criticized this recent launch as a “provocative act” that seriously endangers the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula, and has promised a strong response.

“While vigilantly monitoring North Korea’s activities and maintaining a resolute combined defense posture between South Korea and the United States, we will uphold overwhelming capabilities and readiness to counter any provocation,” announced the JCS.

The recent launches followed North Korea’s warning last week that South Korea and the U.S. would face a “dear price” for what it deemed “provocative war” drills subsequent to their joint summertime exercise Ulchi Freedom Shield.

The North has long criticized joint military exercises between the South and the U.S., claiming they are rehearsals for an invasion and using them as a pretext for provocations. The allies have stated that their military drills are defensive in nature.

Thursday’s launch also came after North Korea resumed its trash balloon campaign last week after a near monthlong halt, sending balloons containing scrap paper and plastic bottles toward the South for five consecutive days.

Since late May, North Korea has sent thousands of balloons carrying trash into the South in retaliation against anti-Pyongyang leaflets sent across the border by North Korean defectors and activists in South Korea.

In response to the balloon launches, the South’s military has been blasting daily anti-North Korean propaganda broadcasts through loudspeakers on the border since July 21.
